As Catholics we are a pilgrim people on a life-long journey of conversion in which we individually and as a community are formed more and more into the image and likeness of God. It is a journey that for many of us begins with our parents’ decision to have us baptized into the faith. The journey then continues on through our youth with the preparation for First Communion and later Confirmation.
Our formation in the faith, however, doesn’t end with our youth. There is an old joke that asks the question, “If Jesus played with the children and taught the adults, then why does the Church teach the children and play with the adults?” While there is some truth that in the past the Church has neglected the faith formation of adults, the reality is that the various stages of our adult lives offer us the wonderful opportunity to grow in our understanding of God’s plan for our lives.
Adult faith formation takes many forms. For those exploring the possibility of membership in the Church, we have the RCIA program. For those seeking to get married, there is our Pre-Cana program. For those interested in discovering what our faith asks of us in the issues of Peace and Justice, there is the transformative Just FAITH Program. In addition, we have also recently created an Adult Faith Formation Board to develop and offer a series of programs and mini-courses designed to foster a deeper understanding of our call to be mature Catholic Christians.
For each of us, faith formation is a journey that lasts a lifetime; a journey in which we are guided along the way by many teachers and mentors. These men and women offer us their life experiences, share the insights gained on their journeys, and walk with us on our journey. Faith formation cannot happen without the gifts of these teachers and mentors, and here at St. Camillus there are many different ways of sharing those gifts.
Through involvement in the RCIA program, you can walk with a person as he or she begins the faith journey. If you enjoy working with youth, Religious Education offers an incredible opportunity to make our faith come alive for our young people. With God's grace, we are planting seeds that in the years to come will bear fruit. With almost 600 children in our three programs, there is an incredible need. If your gifts tend more toward organization, perhaps you would like to be part of the exciting work of getting our Adult Faith Formation Board off the ground.
In the “vineyard” of faith formation, there is much work to be done. Won’t you be one of the workers?

What is Alpha for Catholics?
- Alpha for Catholics is a practical introduction to the Christian faith over a 10 week course. Unique in its adult learning approach, Alpha meets participants where they are, starting with their questions.
- Alpha creates an environment of hospitality allowing people to explore the claims of Jesus Christ in our post-modern culture, and encounter the love of God in a personal relationship through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, the core of evangelization.
- Alpha also serves as a refresher course for both practicing Catholics and those on the fringes of their faith. Alpha for Catholics offers people an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ, the living Lord through one of the most effective means of evangelization today.
- Alpha is an effective means of evangelization, a presentation of the initial core message of the Gospel, ‘the kerygma’. It is wholly compatible with Catholic teaching, its name is most appropriate as it is the beginning of faith. Once the foundation who is Jesus is laid, a range of follow on material is available to address specific Catholic teachings and ecclesiology. Alpha for Catholics is a wonderful tool at the stage of inquiry for those seeking the RCIA process.
- Not a substitute for catechetical programs, Alpha works best as part of an ongoing process of evangelization and catechesis within a parish.
- The Alpha course shares the essentials of the Christian faith in a non-threatening way. As it has spread across the world among various denominations, it has become very popular in the Catholic Church. The course is the same wherever it is run, but it takes on the flavor of the hosting church and for Catholics it is best described as “Alpha for Catholics” In practice this means that the small group experiences will often include discussions about Catholic beliefs and practices.
- Alpha for Catholics is running in over 60 countries worldwide. Alpha is running globally in over 169 countries and in over 100 languages.
What are the benefits for the parish?
- Alpha encourages people to become active in the life of the parish
- Alpha provides a witness to Christian unity
- Alpha builds community – friendships grow
- Alpha builds outward looking parishes
- Alpha helps to reach the unchurched and the lapsed
- Alpha feeds adult education programs (such as RCIA)
Where did Alpha begin? The Alpha course from Holy Trinity Brompton Anglican Church of London is a course intended to share the basic Gospel message with non-Christians. It is also very helpful for new Christians to grow in their faith, and many life-long Christians say it has renewed their faith or challenged them in new ways.
What does the Alpha Course involve? The course involves ten weekly gatherings with:
- a dinner
- DVD (or live) presentation
- small group discussion
- a weekend overnight event.
