Why I Come

We joined St. Camillus as parishioners in 2001. We had just returned from living overseas for many years and enjoying Catholic communities abroad, and were looking for a place that reminded us of the church universal, the church as a microcosm of the whole world.  St. Camillus' vibrant culture, social justice mission and music captured us on our first visit: In fact, we found the church first, and began looking to buy a home nearby. It has remained an anchor of our life in America.  Every time my older daughter lectors, I marvel once again how at home she is at St. Camillus: from her elementary school years at St Camillus school and receiving most of her sacraments, through discovering her adult experience of faith in the SEARCH retreats for teens.  She now does volunteer work at the parish office.  My younger daughter has found her place in helping lead the children's liturgy, and especially loves our wonderful Youth Group Director.  When she was small, my younger daughter used to ask, "We have to go to church so Daddy can sing, don't we?"  For my husband, St. Camillus is the music of the multicultural choir, of which he has been a proud member ever since we discovered it.  For me, St. Camillus is a place of faith in action, of community, of celebration and support.  I have loved watching my children grow up here, as well as lectoring, traveling to El Salvador on St. Francis Builds trips, participating in small faith sharing groups, and little things like working with the carnival or watching my family sing at the Mardi Gras party.  I joined the Parish Council and have worked closely with the Best Practices for Parishes strategic planning process because I have a strong sense of belonging in this parish... and a desire to protect what is so wonderful about it.

That is why the Sabonis-Helf family comes to St. Camillus, why do you?

Last week at many of our Masses we we deeply touched and saddened by the poignant story of one of our young people on the verge of being deported, this week even thought this outstanding student has spent all but 14months of his life in America, the only country he has ever known.  We were asked to keep him in our prayers, but also to contact our representtives in Congress.  We are happy to report that INS has granted a deferral, a very rare grant.   Yves and his family thank everyone for there support, advocacy and prayers. to watch a Tetelivision report of the happy family receiving the news  click here
