Spotlight on Stewardship
We all have heard the expression that you never get a second chance to make a firs t impression. For those of us who have been here a while, maybe we hadn’t noticed it before but the first impression of someone coming to St. Camillus might not have been the most stellar. The signs on Avenel had become overgrown, the cross rusted, the retaining wall along the driveway rotted and crumbling. Then, this spring we all began to see changes and it all started with one of our young people, Robin Dreher. Although Robin certainly had many other options available to him, he wanted to do his Boy Scout project here in his parish and he jumped at the chance to replace our eyesore of a retaining wall with a beautiful new stone one that will be with us for generations. To do it he enlisted friends, family and troop members and in one day completed the transformation. But the spirit wasn’t finished yet (nor ever is!). When Juan Flores, a member of Cursillo and a mason by trade, saw all that this young man had accomplished he came to me and said: Padre, now we really need to do something about the entrance. I’m sure you have experienced this at home; you paint the walls and all of a sudden you realize how shabby the curtains have become. Well, it was kind of the same thing. So, like Robin, Juan brought together family, friends and other members of Cursillo and they transformed both sides of our entrance with two beautiful planters that gives us a new, far more dignified, more welcoming face. We are all so grateful for the twin gifts given to us by these two men, who together with their families and friends provide us with one more example of what Stewardship looks like here at St. Camillus. |
